Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl grate the onion and garlic ( this step is important dont chop onion you must grate it bc the juice from the onion when you do this helps keep meatballs moist ) then add in the rice, ketchup, worcestershire sauce and some salt and pepper and mix to combine - then add in the meat and mix
- Next roll meatballs about the size of a golf ball and then take each one and wrap it inside a cabbage leaf - its okay if it does not stay together because when cooking they will come apart a bit and we just need it for the flavor not the presentation :)
- Meanwhile in a large deep pan on medium heat add the oil and garlic and cook about 3 minutes and then add in the tomatoes, chicken stock, ketchup, worcestershire sauce and some salt and pepper and mix well to combine
- Last, drop in the meatballs tucked inside the cabbage and cover and cook about and hour and enjoy! I serve these over mash potatoes because that is the way my grandmother made it for me when I was little and its delicious! This recipe was my favorite one from my childhood - my sweet polish grandmother Helen made this and I tried to recreate it in her memory- its not perfect because we cant find her original recipe and I'm still tweaking it :) But this is pretty close- I remembered the ketchup because my mom said she put it in everything! I miss her so much!!!

Thank you so much for posting this. Food is a wonderful way to warmly remember loved ones. I also miss my Eastern European Grandma and love trying to recreate her signature dishes. Thanks again, the cabbage makes all the difference!
